European Language Award for IILT's In-service programme for Language Support Teachers

17th November 2006

IILT has received a European Award for Languages for our In-service
programme for Language Support Teachers in Primary Schools throughout Ireland. The award was presented to Dr Barbara Lazenby Simpson (IILT) by Rónán Mac Con Iomaire from TG4, at a ceremony in Galway attended by the City's Mayor, Niall Ó Brolacháin.

In the words of the jury:

"The project is deeply rooted in the research pertaining to second language acquisition and shows the depth of knowledge of its developers. Therefore it brings to bear all the aspects of second language learning that are pertinent to the target group.

Will it contribute to building citizenship? Very definitely! Again because schools are being enabled to develop complete parity of esteem for all their pupils the consequences for building citizenship are obvious."

The European Awards for Languages recognise creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate students, and make the best of available resources at every level of education and training.

The European Award for Languages is coordinated by the European Commission and managed on a decentralised basis by each member state. Léargas has been responsible for co-ordinating the Award since 2004.
