World Refugee Day Celebrations 20th June

21st June 2007

IILT Dublin hosted the premier of Hazim's Here and There, a one-man performance inspired by an Iraqi mother (this piece will also be performed as part of Dublin City Council's Intercultural Storytelling evening, more details on http://www.project.ie/cgi-bin/eventdetail.pl?id=608)

Song, music and dancing kept all celebrating, including Manuel Jordan of the UNHCR who came to celebrate the day with us.

Michael D. Higgins TD opened World Refugee Day celebrations in Galway, with IILT, the Galway Refugee Support Group and the Refugee Information Service joining to host the day in the Westside Library.

IILT Waterford celebrated the day with Moldovan and Russian traditional music, and opened an exhibition of personal experiences of being a refugee - courageous testimonies speaking of events that caused the start of the journey to Ireland, experiences of life here and hopes for the future. The day was followed by a tour of the Copper Coast, thanks to the as always generous support of the Edmund Rice Centre and the ISU.

IILT Sligo, Mullingar and Carrick-on-Shannon went on a tour of beaches and Glencarn Waterfall, the first time that they had been to the beach. All managed to enjoy the tour and even managed to dodge the showers sufficiently to enjoy a picnic on the beach. Thanks to the Mullingar Partnership and Fidelma from the County Leitrim Partnership for their generous support for transport costs for the day.
